lark_in_flight: Cosette looking upwards, uncertain and/or worried (answers that somehow seem wrong)

She won't say a thing about Marius's part in it. It feels horribly disloyal -- and anyway, she doesn't understand it properly yet; it's all a muddle of worry and vague hints. It would certainly be unfair to say something inaccurate to her mother, who's never met Marius at all, and she doesn't know what is or isn't accurate at all, right now.

"I don't know," she half-wails, before she pulls herself back together a little more.

"No, that isn't right. I do know a little. He was trying to be kind and good. He thought -- he wanted to protect me, he thought I would be better without him. Have you ever heard anything so silly? It could almost make me laugh. And then he -- somehow, some silly way, he got the idea that he wasn't entirely welcome, no matter how many times I told him so, and -- and he was trying to be good to me, he was, only he didn't listen to me, not a word."
