lark_in_flight: Cosette looking upwards, uncertain and/or worried (answers that somehow seem wrong)

Cosette had guessed, from things her father and mother haven't said, from her mother's allusions to that wicked inspector and the mysterious history that her father and Javert have, that Fantine might have some kind of history of unpleasant conflict with him too. But she hadn't expected anything like this. She starts upright in her mother's grasp, wide-eyed, shocked out of her tears.

She doesn't know whether to argue or to soothe her. She falls back on instinct, and draws closer to stroke her mother's hair. "Mother, no, it's not that at all! You're quite safe, Papa's quite safe, M. Javert did nothing of the sort, everyone will be quite well, only be easy."
