"He shall not ever again." That's fierce, watery and defiant, even if it's rather muffled.

"He -- he was, he didn't -- I don't know what he was thinking!" Only she does, now, a little. She sits up just enough to scrub fruitlessly at her eyes. "He was... he was trying to protect me. From secrets in his past. I don't care a bit about them, I don't, he's my dear papa! But he was so very--"

Afraid, she bites back.

"I thought he'd gone away on a trip. He does that sometimes, you know, if never so long. He said so. I sent my maid to ask at his door. He's on a trip, madame, he'll send for you when he returns. That's the word she brought. And he was there all along, he was ill and getting weaker, he never said a word to me! Not until M. Javert showed up at the door and told us to go to him. And then Father called me Cosette, he called me tu, but he was so very ill, it was horrible."
