lark_in_flight: Cosette as a child, dirty and ragged, half-obscured by a dark shape (the child who was lost in a wood)

Cosette lets herself be drawn down to sit beside her mother, with a warm arm around her. It feels so good, so comforting -- her mother, someone beloved and instantly comforting, and someone whom she isn't even a little angry at, and whom she doesn't even have to doubt whether she should be even a little angry at. She never had a mother who could hold her close, and as utterly as she loves her father, there have been times she's secretly ached for a mother.

"I'm sorry," she weeps into her mother's embrace, "I don't want to upset you too, really I'm all right. I was just, I was just so scared. It's Papa, he's sick. The doctor here -- we brought him here, M. le docteur Joly, he cared for him, he'll be well soon, but oh, Maman, it was awful."
